Overview

Clannad Image Vocal Album -Sorarad- is one of the most acclaimed items in Key's discography. Inspired by Lia's covers of Air originals, Key asked Clannad vocalist riyu to return to interpret arrangements of several instrumental tracks from the album. This time, the arrangers took a more expansive approach and were inspired by the organic images of the game throughout.

Body

Right from the opener, "The Girl's Fantasy", Key takes listeners on a surreal journey. The first three minutes of the song may be slow, but they immerse listeners into a beautiful fantasy world — suspending the celestial tones from riya above an array of new age synthpads. With exotic percussion and hymnal chorus, the development in the second half is understated but spine-tingling. The arrangement extensively quotes "Illusions" from the soundtrack, but never relies on it. Rather than being a typical remix, it is an accomplishment in its own right, inspired by the imagery of the game's opening.

"Roar of the Distant Sea" is bound to inspire contemplation from listeners with its pensive vocals and stirring motifs. It is much closer to Key's established sound and is even reminiscent of the ballads of Air in places. While let down by some trashy pop beats half way through, it is otherwise a very convincing cover filled with bittersweet emotion. "Memory of a Distant Journey" is also a central highlight on the album. Initially blending stylistic aspects of the two aforementioned covers, it builds into an expressive chorus at the 1:56. riya's vocals at this point, in combination with the sensitively implemented instrumentals, provide the highlight moment of the entire album.

Featured on the anime series, "Over" is a more typical cover of "Like the Wind" featuring jubilant vocal lines and bouncy pop-flavoured instrumentals. It's nevertheless an enjoyable interlude and has some hidden depths, notably the ethereal section beginning at the 3:09 mark. Less impressive is "Ten Thousand Places", which shifts somewhat erratically between themes and styles, even throwing in some random sitar parts in places. While it has its moments, it is something of a mess. The release closes with the ballad "Shining in the Sky". While the new age backing is relatively generic here, the tone and breadth of riya's vocals make up for it and ensure a very personal closure to the release.

Summary

Clannad's image album is generally worthy of its esteemed reputation. The originals are generally interpreted in a creative and convincing way, while the vocal performances throughout are stunning. There are a few bumps along the way and the album is a little overpriced for its length. Nevertheless, it's highly recommended for those that enjoy the more spiritual sounds of Key.
